An Story of Surprising Kindness: When a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
During 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I figured to book accommodation upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – only to discover the local airport, not like the one back home, is not open around the clock. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I caught a bus into town and started wandering near a gaming venue, thinking I could pass the night in an establishment that stayed open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more people who show such kindness.
I must have looked lost because a young woman noticed me loitering in the city center and asked if everything was alright. I shared my situation and without hesitation she said I could sleep on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided some food: one of the sandwiches she had taken home her work shift. This gave me warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and safe to spend the night.
In retrospect, it’s clear to me what a big chance she undertook as a young woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and was oblivious to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance – yet deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not go to ANU, and I never saw the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of kindness. It is my wish the universe has repaid her act of kindness many times over. We could all use more folks who show such kindness.
