Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
