US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the closure began.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in history.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as other flights stretching north to the city of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an mean of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the country, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The agency advised travelers in the state to consult airlines about revised flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the World Series, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday night, and about one month before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak times to fly in the United States.

Strain on American aviation contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had entered its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted a number of air traffic controllers to remain absent on the identical date on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.
