French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to start intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to back the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative states officers will start taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister left office.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
