Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Yes, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom stated when pressed about giving serious thought to a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he noted that any decision is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

He has stepped forward as a prominent critic of the former president's team, using his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would boost Democratic House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has drawn criticism from critics.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary disclosed intentions to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened eliminating the power to grant trucking licenses.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," he stated, following a this week's tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen trucker that led to three deaths and casualties.

The governor's team noted that the national authorities had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to receive a commercial driver's license under federal law.

Duffy had earlier stated he was holding back $40m from the state for failing to implement linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," the governor's team said in a last month's statement addressing the funding warnings. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Future Prospects

A this month's poll revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters said that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an average of 33.5% from around 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.

Some time ago, Newsom remarked while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He mentioned his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the American people."
