Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
