We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the images originated was based on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
