McKenna's Position on Celtic

The Ipswich boss referred to Celtic as "a really big football club" but emphasized he is "in the middle" of a "long-term project" with Ipswich Town.

The mid-thirties assumed control of Portman Road in 2021 and led them to the Premier League with back-to-back promotions, but they managed only a handful of victories last campaign as they were demoted back to the Championship and they currently sit 12th in the Championship.

"I have not had any of those discussions," the English capital native ex- Northern Ireland youth international said when asked about being on the candidate list.

"It's not something I have considered seriously, or where any part of my focus is this week.

"I possess a special job here at a special club. And we're at a really important phase of the season. Everything outside of that hasn't reached my awareness."

Background and Agreement Aspects

Reports indicate that the manager would be open to speaking to Celtic given his boyhood allegiances.

"Growing up, we all have our preferences," he said when questioned about these. "It's unlikely everyone has to go around and announce what they used to be, but of course it's a massive sports organization."

McKenna agreed to a fresh four-year contract in 2024 and was questioned about his alleged £5m release clause.

"In every manager's contract, there are provisions," he replied. "I don't know what mine are and, were I informed, I wouldn't disclose you regardless!

"I tackle this job like I will remain Ipswich manager indefinitely. I understand that's not always going to be the case, but I'll always give maximum effort as while I remain in position."

Bellamy's Situation

Bellamy played for Celtic on temporary transfer from Newcastle United in 2005, but the former Welsh forward is minded to complete the ongoing global tournament qualification, a position that would effectively rule out the 46-year-old from assuming the Celtic job.

Wales are currently in third place in their World Cup group behind group toppers Belgium and second-placed North Macedonia.

Victories over Liechtenstein and their rivals in next month would secure their place in the final qualifying round, but they are virtually assured of making those, due to a successful Nations League campaign, even if they not finish as Group J runners-up.

Given his current position, Bellamy, whose contract expires after Euro 2028, would be unavailable until after the play-offs at the minimum.
