President Trump announced on the weekend that he has asked the loved ones of a Guard member fatally shot last week to visit the executive mansion.
He mentioned that he conversed with her family and they were “deeply grieving”.
Background on the Heartbreaking Incident
US army specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a violent incident on last Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her comrade, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Memorials across the state have occurred in their honor.
Presidential Call
The president said he’s talked about a visit to the White House for the loved ones of both soldiers of the West Virginia Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,” Trump addressed reporters. “And likewise with Andrew, no matter the outcome.”
Community Support
Attendees assembled over the weekend at Webster County high school in West Virginia to remember Beckstrom.
Both the soldiers had been working with the West Virginia National Guard as part of Trump’s federal initiative to aid policing efforts in DC.
Remembering the Soldier
“She was the type of pupil that educators wished for. She behaved with calm resilience, a contagious smile and a positive energy that encouraged people around her,” Hankins, the principal of Beckstrom’s alma mater, informed the media. “She was sweet, caring and always eager to assist people.”
Memorial arrangements for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Legal Measures and Government Adjustments
Officials have indicted a twenty-nine-year-old suspect with a charge of homicide and charges of violent assault while carrying a weapon.
The incident caused the Trump administration to pause asylum processing and cease granting visas to owners of travel documents.
Status of the Airman
Wolfe, a native of Martinsburg, started his military career in 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman high school, according to the AP.
He is still undergoing care and is “fighting for his life”, the state’s leader Morrisey said on a news program.
The state’s top lawyer Bondi stated on a news show that she aimed to speak to Wolfe’s family.
Legacy of the Fallen Soldier
Sarah, from Summersville, completed her education from Webster County high school in mid-2023 and enlisted soon after, working as a military police officer with honor, according to the West Virginia National Guard.
“She had a lot of kindness and she definitely had bravery,” the governor informed the gathering at the vigil. “Though her time was cut short, she has made an impact that’s going to be remembered always.”
