Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to question specific decisions from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
